How does our underwater photoshoot work?
There’s nothing quite like watching your baby swim underwater—it’s a truly magical moment! At Water Babies, we understand how meaningful these memories are. This is why our expert underwater photographers are here to beautifully capture your kid’s progress, creating a keepsake you’ll cherish for years to come.

Getting ready for your underwater photoshoot
This experience is open to all swimmers, whether it’s your baby’s first photoshoot or they’re learning in our Swimvincible program, it’s a great way to capture their progress and see how much they’ve grown!
Our top-tier photographers use the best equipment to deliver stunning, high-resolution images to truly capture the magic of your child in the water. Photoshoots are held a few times a year, and your instructor will always keep you informed about upcoming sessions so you can reserve your spot.
Before the big day
- Your instructor and local team will provide all the important details you’ll need, including the location, date, and time slot for your photoshoot.
- We’ll also send friendly reminders as the shoot date gets closer.
- In advance of the photoshoot, your instructor will assess if your child is ready.
- If they need a little more time to build confidence with submersions, we might suggest waiting for the next session—after all, we only go ahead when they’re feeling comfortable and ready!
Meet our photographers & dippers
Capturing underwater moments isn’t as simple as point and click! Our photographers are highly skilled in holding their breath, controlling their heart rate, and handling heavy equipment in challenging lighting conditions—all while timing the perfect shot with a wriggly baby.
Many of our team started as scuba divers before taking up professional underwater photography, and some have even worked for the BBC and National Geographic!

I’ve been part of the Water Babies family since 2018, starting in the Photography Department before becoming an underwater photographer in 2022. Photography has been a passion of mine since childhood, and I’ve always loved swimming. Recently completing a Channel-distance charity swim in my local pool. Being able to combine both loves at Water Babies is a dream, capturing magical moments that celebrate each little one’s journey in the water.

“Never work with children or animals,” they say, but I do both; and I love it. This is my 10th year photographing babies underwater with Water Babies, but my experience goes way back. In the ’90s, I was a diving magazine editor before working as an assignment photographer for Greenpeace and International Animal Rescue.

Being a Dipper for Water Babies is my passion, and I love sharing that passion by mentoring others. After years in the role, I joined the Dipper Tutoring Team, helping experienced teachers refine their skills and push their limits.
Our training is immersive, two intense days in the pool, followed by a mentored photoshoot and a final assessment. The whole journey takes six to nine months, ensuring our team is the best in the business.

Underwater photoshoots are a one-of-a-kind way to capture your child’s swim journey—whether it’s their very first time going underwater or they’re already a swimming pro! These moments make for incredible memories, and with a little prep, your photoshoot experience can be as smooth and fun as possible.
Here are our top tips to help you make the most of this unforgettable experience:
- Book early: Our underwater photoshoots are offered just a few times a year, and spots fill up quickly! As soon as your instructor announces the next shoot, be sure to lock in your session.
- Confidence comes first: Your child’s comfort is our #1 priority. For our babies, if they’re not quite ready for submersions, no worries—it’s totally fine to wait for the next shoot. We only move forward when they feel confident and at ease.
- Trust the experts: Our specially trained Dippers will gently guide your child underwater, and our pro photographers will capture the magic moment in just seconds. You’re in safe, experienced hands!
- Stay in the know: Your instructor and local team will keep you posted with all the key details—like time, location, and what to bring—plus friendly reminders leading up to the shoot.
- Three dips, more memories: Each child gets up to three underwater submersions, which means you’ll have a variety of stunning images to choose from.
- Dress it up (if you want!): Want to add a fun twist? Coordinated swimwear or cute costumes can make for extra-special photos! Just make sure anything you bring is pool-friendly and safe for the water.
- Hop in the frame: Want to be in the photo with your child? We’d love that! Just give your local team a heads-up ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
- Bring your partner, too: Looking to turn the shoot into a family moment? Let us know in advance if your partner would like to join so we can make sure everything’s set up for a safe and smooth experience.
- Skip the lotions: For the clearest photos possible, avoid applying lotions, oils, or creams before the shoot—clean skin helps keep the water crystal clear.
- Soak it all in: Relax, smile, and enjoy the magic of the moment. These photos will be treasured for years to come!

After the photoshoot, you’ll receive a link to a secure online gallery accessible only by you. There, you can view and select the images you’d like to purchase. To buy the entire gallery, click the orange button on the top right. Payments can be made using a credit or debit card.
No, the photos aren’t available for viewing immediately. The cameras are housed in waterproof cases, which are opened after the shoot. The images are then sent to editors and will be available online for you to view within two weeks.
Your baby’s comfort is paramount. If they’re not feeling well or are uncomfortable, Water Babies will not proceed with the photoshoot. You can arrange with your local office to reschedule for another time when your baby is ready.
Of course! Creating timeless moments between you and your little one is what we do best, it’s no surprise that if you want we will photograph you too. To be in a shot with your little one, you’ll just need to call your local office in advance so that we can make all of the arrangements for the two of you.
If you would like to be in the picture with your significant other, you must contact your local office to arrange this in advance. This way we can make all of the necessary safety steps ahead of time.
We want everyone to come and enjoy themselves at our photoshoots. However, not all venues can accommodate spectators so please check with your local office before attending.
Our photographers and equipment are world-class, so you can feel confident that you’ll be taking home a beautifully crisp, high resolution shot of your baby, striking their best pose. If you want the opportunity to go under with your little one please contact your local office in advance.
